Burnaby Neighbourhood speaker series: Untold Histories & the Legacy of the Chinese Community on Deer Lake

Thursday, October 8
6:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Explore a range of historical and cultural topics by local speakers through the Burnaby Neighbourhood History series online via Zoom or Facebook Live. Community members are invited to bring and ask questions of the speakers during these interactive sessions. Presented in partnership with Burnaby Village Museum and Burnaby Art Gallery. This free online event requires access to internet and Zoom or Facebook.

The site of the Burnaby Art Gallery and surrounding Century Garden are rich with stories of early settlers.  British farmers and social elite have shaped the history of this area since the early 1900s.  This presentation highlights the unseen presence of a Chinese community that is equally profound in its connection to this historic place. Through the discovery of a ‘Pak Chu’ (White Pearl) gaming piece, Lee’s public art installation (April 2021) explores a parallel site history and celebrates the profound contributions of the Chinese Canadian community. Join us for this presentation and re-discover this beautiful area in a more complex way! Presented by Nathan Lee, Lead Designer and co-founder of Contexture Design.

Register online, at any branch, or call 604-436-5400. A link and password to join the Zoom Meeting will be sent by email.
