GlobalTV's Mike McCardell and his camera crew joined BPL staff in a visit with 88-year-old BPL Home Library Service patron Bernie Smith at his home, Wednesday, February 2, 2011.
Bernie Smith is legally blind and has been registered for audiobook service at BPL for six years. He is also the subject of a well loved NFB film from 1975 titled Whistling Smith. At the time of the film, Bernie was a beat cop on Vancouver's Eastside and was described as follows: "...more than the iron hand of the law, he is also counsellor and friend."
The segment aired on GlobalTV's newscast at 6pm and 11pm on February 2.
