Workshops to help your child get ready to read

Children get ready to read long before they start school. You can help preschoolers learn important pre-reading skills now so they can begin school ready to learn and read.

Join us at a workshop

Our librarians are trained to present fun and informative workshops where parents, caregivers and early childhood educators can learn:

  • six easy ways to help children get ready to read, including demonstrations of activities and ideas to try at home
  • successful techniques for reading with preschoolers
  • what to look for when choosing books for young children

Please note: The workshops are intended for adults only, not children.

What participants have said:

"Excellent ideas and information . . . very helpful."
"Awesome presentation - well organized and fun."
"The workshop gave me great ideas . . . I wish all parents in Burnaby would get this advice."
"An informative evening, fabulous handouts and reading lists - well done!"
"It's great to know the Library is supporting what kindergarten teachers feel is important."

Help Your Child Get Ready to Read workshops are based on research done for the Public Library Association by leading early-childhood experts Dr. Grover Whitehurst and Dr. Christopher Lonigan.
