Sharing the fun of reading

Children who enjoy books and reading will be curious about learning how to read.
Read aloud daily, visit the public library with your child, give books as presents and read yourself. There's nothing like a good role model!

Ideas to try

• Choose books YOU like to read. Browse our lists of good stories for newborns to age 5 for suggestions. 
• Read aloud when you and your child are in a good mood.  Remember: small child = small time.
• Let your child play quietly while listening to a story.
• Listen to stories on CD or online.
• Leave "irresistible" books around the house.
• Share silly poems, jokes or riddles at the dinner table.  List of titles
• Let your child look at books with a flashlight under the bedcovers.
• Try the "hear and say" method of reading.
