Encouraging your child to describe things

Comprehension is the most important reading skill of all. Being able to talk about and describe what happens in a story shows that your child understands what is being read.

Ideas to try

  • Encourage your child to describe real events and make up stories.
  • Create a "my best thing today" ritual at bedtime.
  • Act out simple stories that work well with props or puppets. List of titles
  • Help your child make a scrapbook with captions.
  • Share books that make it fun to predict what comes next.  List of titles 
  • Encourage your child to predict what a picture book will be about before reading.
