ESL: listening to spoken English

Children learn language by listening.  They will hear English in fun and interesting ways by using audiobooks,
music CDsDVDs, and stories online. Younger children will learn new words at library storytimes.

Audiobooks

Listening to stories read aloud is a great way to learn vocabulary and hear the rhythm and pronunciation of English. We have a large collection of children's book on CD.  Browse our catalogue to find the following types of audiobooks:

Picture books
Shorter novels
Longer novels
Folk and fairy tales
Poetry
Nonfiction

In the library, ask us to help you find audiobooks to suit your child's age and reading level.

Music CDs

Children love songs.  The language used in children's songs is often simple and repetitive.
In the library, ask us to help you find music CDs.

DVDs

DVDs are an excellent way to practice listening skills and build vocabulary.
In the library, ask us to help you find:

  • Non-fiction DVDs to help children learn about many subjects, including the alphabet, reading, counting and math.
  • Feature films such as Disney, Thomas the Tank Engine and Dora the Explorer to entertain your children - while learning English!
  • Children's ESL DVDs that are made especially for young English language learners.

Stories online

Listen and read along with picture and chapter books online through resources such as Tumblebooks and Tumblereadables.  Words are highlighted as they are being read. Stories with pictures are animated for added interest.
Find Tumblebooks, Tumblereadables and similar resources on the Hear a Story page.
