Overview

InstantFlix: Powered by IndieFlix offers over 6,500 independent films from more than 50 countries, including dramas, comedies, documentaries, classic film and television, shorts, thrillers and more. There are no apps to download, or checkouts or holds to manage. Stream an unlimited number of films on your computer, tablet, smart phone, or web-enabled TV using an internet browser, on demand!

Note: due to distribution licensing, some content is unavailable for viewing within Canada.

  • a library card registered with Burnaby Public Library
  • a valid email address 
  • an RBdigital account (also used for Zinio and OneClickdigital). If you don't have one, steps to register are included with the instructions below.
  • a web-enabled computer, device, or TV
  • a broadband/high speed Internet connection

System and device requirements

Windows XP 
  • 32/64-bit Windows XP SP2 with all current updates applied
  • Pentium III processor or better
  • At least 512MB of RAM (1GB or more recommended)
Windows Vista
  • Any 32/64-bit version of Windows Vista with all current updates applied
  • Pentium IV processor or better
  • At least 1GB of RAM (1.5GB or more recommended)
Mac OS X
  • Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or above
  • At least 512MB of RAM (1GB or more recommended)
  • G4 processor or higher
Internet requirements

A broadband/high speed Internet connection (DSL or Cable) with a download speed of at least 800kbps is required for streaming (higher download speeds are required for higher bitrate content).

Browser settings

JavaScript must be enabled on your internet browser and is usually on by default. If in doubt, check your browser settings.

Using InstantFlix in a browser

  1. InstantFlix is available under Databases A to Z, on the BPL website. If you are accessing InstantFlix from outside of the library, log in with your library barcode number and PIN when prompted.

  2. InstantFlix users must create an account with the vendor, RBdigital. Select "Create New Account" in the upper right corner of the site and complete the fields. If you already use Zinio or OneClickdigital through BPL, you have an existing RBdigital account. Select "Login" instead and enter your account information used for Zinio or OneClickdigital to use the InstantFlix collection. To recover your password, select "Forget password?" in the login form and enter your email address.

  3. Click the "Browse Films" button to be taken to the InstantFlix collection.

    On the left-hand navigation menu, select "Discover" for featured films and recently added films. Select "Browse Films" to explore by genre, duration, audience, or "Channels" for a broader range of sub-genres. There's also a search function to find films by title, actor, or director. When you select a film, a page will load with information (i.e. production details, cast and crew, synopsis, trailer, festivals entered, and more). Press the "Play" icon over the video frame to stream your film.

  4. Select "MyFlix" in the left navigation menu to track films you've watched, access your RBdigital account or log off.

InstantFlix for Xbox 360

You'll need an activation code in order to associate your Xbox with your InstantFlix account.

  1. Using your computer or mobile device, access BPL's InstantFlix site following Steps 1 and 2 of using InstantFlix in a browser.
  2. Select "My Account" in the lower left corner.

  3. Select the "Xbox" button in the upper right corner.

  4. Note the device code provided.

  5. Power on your Xbox and from the home screen, select the "App page." Browse for and download the InstantFlix app.

  6. Select the "Log In" tile on the InstantFlix app home screen. Enter the device code provided in Step 4, then select "Confirm."

InstantFlix for Roku

  1. From your computer or mobile device, access BPL's InstantFlix site following Steps 1 and 2 of instructions for using InstantFlix in a browser.

  2. Power on your Roku deice. Visit the Channel Store, select Movies & TV in the purple menu bar, search for InstantFlix, then select "+ Add channel."
  3. Choose a film and select "Watch Full Film." Note the activation code that appears.

  4. Return to the InstantFlix site on your computer or mobile device. Select "My Account" in the lower left corner.

  5. Select the "Roku" button near the upper right corner.

  6. Enter the activation code from Step 3. If you have more than one Roku device, you will need to follow the set-up instructions for each unit as seprate activation codes are required.

Frequently asked questions

When I try logging in to InstantFlix with my RBdigital account, I get a message that says "Please log in through your library account (burnabybc)."

You may have tried logging in directly to your RBdigital account on the InstantFlix website, without authenticating with your library barcode number and PIN first. To authenticate, make sure that you access BPL's InstantFlix subscription from our Databases A to Z page, select InstantFlix, enter your library card and PIN when prompted, then log in with your RBdigital account.

I'm on the InstantFlix website and getting prompted to enter my credit card/payment information to watch films.

InstantFlix is a paid subscription that is free for BPL patrons. If you visit InstantFlix without going through the BPL website and authenticating with your library card barcode number and PIN, the service won't recognize you as a user of our subscription.

Access BPL's InstantFlix subscription from our Databases A to Z page, select InstantFlix, then enter your library card number and PIN when prompted.

Can I access Zinio, OneClickdigital, and InstantFlix with the same log in and password?

RBdigital owns InstantFlix, Zinio (downloadable mazines) and OneClickdigital (downloadable audiobooks). One-time registration for an RBdigital account is required when you use one of these services for the first time. You can then use all three services with your RBdigital account.  

Your login credentials for InstantFlix can be used interchangeably to access Zinio. Log in with the email address and password associated with your RBdigital account.

Sign in to OneClickdigital with the username and password associated with your RBdigital account. 

Can I use the InstantFlix app to watch films?

The InstantFlix app does not support library subscriptions. In order to watch films, you will need use an internet browser on your mobile device. Visit our Databases A to Z page, select InstantFlix, enter your library barcode and PIN when prompted, then log in with your RBdigital account. The mobile version of the InstantFlix site will load after you log in, and the films are optimized to fit your screen.

Is there closed captioning?

At this time, none of the films provide closed captioning.

Are there subtitles?

Some foreign language films include English subtitles. If the filmmaker has supplied subtitles with their film submission, they will be hardcoded into the video file and will run as the video plays.
