Burnaby Public Library (BPL) is an urban system of four busy branches – Bob Prittie Metrotown, Cameron, McGill and Tommy Douglas – serving a diverse and changing population of more than 215,000 and with an annual circulation of about 3,800,000.
BPL is big enough to give you opportunities to advance your skills, knowledge and career, yet small enough for you to know your colleagues in all four branches.
At BPL, you could be a member of a committed team of professional librarians and clerical staff who:
Librarians must possess a master's degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited university. Librarians at BPL can be involved in collection management, information assistance, readers’ advisory, programming, planning and cataloguing as well as participating in community events. Librarian duties may also include the supervision of other staff.
Library clerks must have completed the 12th school grade, preferably supplemented by commercial courses. Library clerks can work in a variety of positions. These can include working on a public information desk, working in a circulation department, processing new materials in our acquisitions and cataloguing departments, providing delivery service to patrons who are confined to home, and carrying out various administrative duties.
Library pages shelve returned library materials and keep all items in order on the shelves. They also tidy the library by ensuring that all materials left by library users on tables, desks and chairs, etc. are gathered and returned to the proper areas.
Building service workers must have completed the eighth school grade. Completion of a building service worker course is preferred. A valid BC driver’s licence is required. Building service workers' duties include janitorial and minor maintenance work related to the building and grounds of a branch library. On occasion they may also be required to drive a delivery vehicle.
You may apply in person at any of our four branches by completing in full an Application for Employment form. You are welcome to submit a current resume with the BPL application.
You may print a copy of the Application for Employment – Librarian form or the Application for Employment - Library Clerk and Building Service Worker form, complete it in full and either return it to any of our four branches in person or mail it to the Burnaby Public Library’s Administration Office at 6100 Willingdon Avenue, Burnaby, BC, V5H 4N5.
To apply for a library page position you must attend the branch that you wish to work in and complete in full an Application for Auxiliary Employment (Student) form.
All external applications received are kept on file for one year.
We thank all applicants for their interest in Burnaby Public Library, however only those under consideration for an interview will be contacted.
